My Nana Taught Me This Trick to Stop Weeds From Sprouting

The catch with the “2-minute, zero-work” weed hacks is that nothing reliably prevents weeds instantly. But you can make weed control much easier with one simple approach: remove existing weeds and cover the soil so new seeds can’t easily germinate.

Try this low-effort method

1. Pull or hoe existing weeds while the soil is slightly damp.

2. Cover bare soil with 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) of organic mulch, such as wood chips, straw, or shredded leaves.

3. Keep mulch a few centimeters away from plant stems and tree trunks.

4. Check the area periodically and pull small weeds before they establish deep roots.

For paths and cracks

For weeds growing between paving stones, boiling water can kill the foliage you treat. Pour it carefully and directly onto the weeds, avoiding desirable plants. It won’t provide permanent prevention because new seeds can germinate later.

Skip the risky “miracle” mixtures

Household recipes involving salt, bleach, or concentrated vinegar can damage desirable plants, soil, and surrounding surfaces. Salt in particular can remain in soil and make it difficult for plants to grow afterward.

The real secret: prevention takes a little setup, but mulch or another suitable ground cover can dramatically reduce how much weeding you’ll have to do later.
