Important Warning from Doctors: Stop Taking Vitamin D Immediately If You Have These 4 Symptoms

That headline is too broad. Most people should not stop vitamin D simply because they develop an ordinary symptom. However, taking excessive vitamin D can cause dangerously high calcium levels (hypercalcemia).

4 symptoms that can signal too much vitamin D

If you’re taking high-dose vitamin D and develop:

  1. Persistent nausea or vomiting

  2. Marked thirst and frequent urination

  3. Unusual weakness, fatigue, or confusion

  4. Loss of appetite or constipation

these can occur with vitamin-D toxicity and warrant medical evaluation. Very high calcium levels can become serious and affect the kidneys and heart.

Vitamin D toxicity is usually caused by excessive supplementation, not by normal sun exposure or eating vitamin-D-containing foods. The NIH lists 4,000 IU (100 micrograms) per day as the tolerable upper intake level for most adults from all sources, although doctors may temporarily prescribe higher doses to treat documented deficiency.

Don’t abruptly stop medically prescribed treatment

If vitamin D was prescribed because you have a deficiency or another medical condition, contact your clinician before changing the dose. If you are taking a very high dose without medical supervision and have several of the symptoms above, seek medical advice promptly.

If you tell me your vitamin D dose (IU), how often you take it, and how long you’ve been taking it, I can help you understand whether the dose is considered low, typical, or high.
