Important Warning from Doctors: Stop Taking Vitamin D Immediately If You Have These 4 Symptoms

That headline is too alarmist. Vitamin D is important, and deficiency is common, but excessive vitamin D supplementation can cause toxicity, usually because of taking too much over time.

Symptoms that can occur with too much vitamin D

The main problem is high calcium levels (hypercalcemia). Possible warning symptoms include:

  1. Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite

  2. Excessive thirst and frequent urination

  3. Weakness, fatigue, or confusion

  4. Constipation or abdominal discomfort

Severe vitamin D toxicity can cause kidney problems, kidney stones, abnormal heart rhythms, or significant confusion.

Don’t stop a medically prescribed vitamin D treatment solely because of a social-media checklist. If you think you’re taking too much or have these symptoms, contact your doctor and tell them the dose, how often you take it, and how long you’ve been taking it. A blood test for calcium and vitamin D can help determine whether toxicity is actually present.
