If you start to suffocate and you are alone: save your life in a single second

If you are choking and completely alone, your immediate survival tool is a **self-administered Heimlich maneuver** or using a rigid object to force air from your lungs.

Here is how to execute it in a split second:

—

### The Self-Heimlich Maneuver (Chair Method)

1. **Find a support:** Locate the back of a firm chair, a sturdy table edge, or the corner of a kitchen counter.
2. **Position yourself:** Lean your upper abdomen (the area **just above your navel and well below your ribcage**) heavily against the edge of the object.
3. **Thrust violently:** Press your body down and sharply **inward and upward** into the edge with all your force, replicating the upward thrust of the Heimlich maneuver to force trapped air out of your lungs and dislodge the object.

### Alternative: Floor Drop (If no furniture is nearby)

1. **Drop to your knees:** Get down on all fours.
2. **Collapse forward:** Flatten your arms and forcefully slam your upper abdomen against the floor, landing on your forearms to cushion the fall while driving your diaphragm upward to expel the blockage.

> **Note:** If you are unable to clear your airway and have a phone nearby, dial your local emergency number (like 911) immediately—even if you cannot speak, dispatchers can trace calls or send help if the line is open.

What type of choking situation (food vs. small object) are you preparing for, or is there a specific safety plan you’d like to put together?
