If Your Legs Are Swollen, What Could It Mean?

Leg swelling (edema) has many possible causes. It isn’t automatically a sign of cancer, despite what the viral “sign of ca…” headline may imply.

Common causes include:

  • Standing or sitting for long periods
  • Venous insufficiency or varicose veins
  • Certain medications, including some blood-pressure medicines
  • Injury or inflammation
  • Heart, kidney, or liver problems
  • A blood clot (DVT), particularly when swelling is sudden and affects one leg
  • Lymphatic problems
  • Less commonly, certain cancers or cancer treatments

When swelling needs urgent attention

Seek urgent medical care if swelling is sudden, especially in one leg, and comes with pain, warmth, or redness. Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, coughing blood, or fainting can indicate a potentially life-threatening clot and require emergency care.

If swelling is gradual or persistent, arrange a medical evaluation to determine the cause rather than assuming it’s cancer.

Persistent leg swelling deserves attention, but it is much more often caused by conditions other than cancer.
