If these insects are present on the walls of your home, the reason is…see more

If you’re referring to one of those viral home-health posts, the phrase “if these insects are on your walls, the reason is…” is usually clickbait. The insect matters.

Common possibilities include:

Small flies/gnats: moisture, drains, houseplants, or decaying organic material.
Silverfish: damp, humid areas and access to paper, starches, or other organic materials.
Ants: usually indicate access to food/water and sometimes a nearby nest.
Cockroaches: food, water, warmth, and hiding places; persistent sightings can indicate an infestation.
Clothes moths: may indicate wool, fur, feathers, or other animal-based fabrics that provide food for larvae.
Booklice: often associated with high humidity and mold/fungal growth, rather than being a sign that the house is simply “dirty.”

If you send me a photo of the insects (or tell me what they look like—size, color, shape, and where you see them), I can identify the likely insect and explain why they’re appearing and whether you need to be concerned.
