If your pillows have turned yellow from sweat, body oils, or moisture, these three methods can help freshen them up. Always check the care label first, because some pillows—especially memory foam or latex—should not be machine-washed.
3 tips for washing yellowed pillows
- Pre-treat the yellow stains
For washable pillows, apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent to the stained areas and gently work it in. Let it sit for about 15–30 minutes before washing. - Wash with the warmest safe setting
Use the temperature and cycle recommended on the care label. A mild detergent is usually sufficient. Run an extra rinse if possible so detergent residue doesn’t remain inside the pillow. - Dry completely
Tumble-dry only if the label permits it, using a low or moderate setting. Drying thoroughly is important because moisture trapped inside a pillow can encourage mold and mildew. Fluff the pillow periodically while drying.
For persistent yellowing: Oxygen bleach can be suitable for some white, washable fabrics, but check the care label first and never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar, or other cleaning products.
And if a pillow remains badly discolored, has a persistent odor, or has lost its shape/support, replacing it may be more hygienic than trying to restore it.
