How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

If you have mucus or phlegm in your chest or throat, the goal is usually to loosen it and address the cause, rather than trying to “clean” the lungs with a special remedy.

Natural measures that may help

  • Drink plenty of fluids: Water and warm liquids can help keep mucus less thick.

  • Honey in warm water or tea: Can soothe an irritated throat and may reduce coughing. Never give honey to a child under 1 year.

  • Use saline for nasal congestion: A saline nasal spray or rinse can help when postnasal drip is sending mucus into the throat. For nasal rinses, use distilled/sterile water or previously boiled and cooled water.

  • Humidify the air: A clean humidifier may make dry, irritated airways more comfortable.

  • Avoid smoke and vaping: These can increase airway irritation and mucus production.

  • Stay gently active: Walking can help mobilize secretions when you’re otherwise well enough to exercise.

  • Don’t repeatedly forcefully clear your throat: Frequent harsh throat-clearing can further irritate the tissues.

What about ginger, lemon, or other “detox” recipes?

They may be pleasant and can soothe the throat, but there is no evidence that a particular two-ingredient recipe literally removes mucus from the lungs. Avoid putting oils, vinegar, or other homemade mixtures into your nose or airway.

When to get medical help

See a healthcare professional if phlegm persists for several weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by wheezing, fever, unexplained weight loss, or ongoing cough.

Seek urgent care for significant breathing difficulty, chest pain, or coughing up blood.
