How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus Naturally

Phlegm is mucus produced in the airways. It commonly increases with colds, allergies, sinus drainage, asthma, smoking, or respiratory infections. In many cases, simple measures can make it easier to clear.

7 things that may help

  1. Drink plenty of fluids 💧
Water and warm liquids can help keep mucus thinner and easier to cough up.
  2. Try warm drinks
Warm water, tea, or broth can soothe an irritated throat and may make mucus easier to clear.
  3. Use a humidifier
Moist air may reduce throat and airway irritation. Keep the humidifier clean to prevent mold and bacteria.
  4. Take a warm shower
The warm, moist air can temporarily make congestion feel easier to manage.
  5. Gargle with warm salt water
This can soothe a mucus-irritated throat, although it doesn’t remove mucus from the lungs.
  6. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke 🚭
Smoke irritates the airways and can increase mucus production.
  7. Stay gently active if you feel well enough
Light movement can help you cough and clear secretions more effectively.

What about mucus color?

Yellow or green phlegm doesn’t automatically mean you need antibiotics. Viral infections can also produce colored mucus.

🚨 When to seek medical care

Get prompt medical attention for difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, confusion, bluish lips, or severe weakness. A persistent cough or phlegm—particularly lasting several weeks—also deserves medical evaluation.

If you have asthma, COPD, heart disease, or another chronic lung condition, don’t rely solely on home remedies; follow your prescribed treatment plan.
