If you’re looking for a safe way to clean yellowed or dirty bed pillows, the key is to check the care label first. Not every pillow is machine-washable.
How to clean washable pillows
- Pre-treat stains
Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent to yellow or visibly dirty areas. Gently work it into the fabric and leave it for about 15–30 minutes. - Wash according to the label
Use a mild detergent and the recommended water temperature. If the pillow is machine-washable, washing two pillows together can help keep the machine balanced. - Rinse thoroughly
An extra rinse can help remove detergent trapped inside the filling. - Dry completely
Follow the care label. If tumble-drying is permitted, use a low or moderate temperature and periodically fluff the pillow. Do not put a damp pillow back on the bed, because trapped moisture can encourage mildew. - Freshen naturally
Once completely dry, air the pillow in a clean, well-ventilated area. Avoid heavily perfuming bedding, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies.
Important: Memory-foam and latex pillows generally shouldn’t be put in a washing machine unless the manufacturer specifically says they can be. For those, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions instead.
And if a pillow remains stained, smells musty, has mold, or has lost its shape and support, replacing it may be better than trying to restore it.
