From age 65, how often should you shower (and why over-washing can be harmful to your health)

How often should you shower after 65?

There is no medically required number of showers based solely on being 65 or older. For many older adults, showering 2–3 times a week can be adequate if you’re not sweating heavily, getting dirty, or incontinent. However, washing the face, hands, armpits, groin/genital area, and feet regularly is important.

If you exercise, sweat a lot, live in a hot climate, or have a job that makes you dirty, you may need to shower more often.

Why over-washing can be a problem

As we age, skin often becomes thinner, drier, and more sensitive. Frequent long showers—especially with hot water and strong soaps—can:

  • Strip natural oils from the skin.

  • Increase dryness, itching, and irritation. you have very dry or fragile skin, consider discussing an appropriate

  • Aggravate eczema and other skin conditions.

  • Damage the skin barrier, potentially making it easier for irritants and microbes to enter.

A skin-friendly shower routine

  • Use warm rather than very hot water.

  • Keep showers relatively short—around 5–10 minutes is reasonable.

  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, mainly on areas that actually need washing.

  • You don’t necessarily need to soap your entire body every day.

  • Moisturize immediately afterward, while the skin is still slightly damp.

  • If you have very dry or fragile skin, consider discussing an appropriate bathing routine with your doctor or dermatologist.

One important exception: poor hygiene can also cause problems, particularly for people with incontinence, wounds, infections, heavy sweating, or difficulty caring for themselves. The goal isn’t to avoid bathing—it’s to clean the skin without unnecessarily stripping it.

If you have a specific skin condition or are asking because you shower every day and have dry/itchy skin, tell me what you’re experiencing and I can suggest a gentler routine.
