The phrase “fibromyalgia is the disease of unexpressed emotions” is misleading.
Fibromyalgia is a real chronic pain condition involving altered pain processing in the nervous system. Its exact cause is still unknown, and researchers believe multiple factors—including genetics, physical or psychological stress, sleep disturbance, and nervous-system changes—can contribute.

Emotional stress can influence fibromyalgia, but that does not mean suppressed anger, sadness, trauma, or other “unexpressed emotions” are the underlying cause. Stress can worsen pain and trigger flares, creating a cycle in which pain increases stress and stress increases pain.

Importantly, this does not mean the symptoms are “all in your head.” Fibromyalgia pain is genuine, and treatments can include appropriately paced exercise, improving sleep, psychological approaches such as CBT/ACT, and medication when appropriate.

Bottom line: emotional health matters in fibromyalgia, but saying that fibromyalgia is simply a “disease of unexpressed emotions” is not supported by current medical evidence.
