Fall Awakening: Breathing Life into House Flowers with a Little Secret 🍂🌸
As temperatures change in autumn, many houseplants and flowering plants slow their growth. A few simple care adjustments can help them stay healthy and encourage continued blooming.
1. Give them the right light ☀️
Shorter autumn days mean less natural light. Move plants closer to a bright window if their light requirements allow it, while protecting sensitive plants from cold drafts.
2. Adjust watering 💧
Don’t water automatically on the same schedule you used during summer. Check the soil first. If the top layer is dry and the plant’s needs call for watering, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
3. Feed carefully 🌱
Flowering plants may benefit from an appropriate balanced or flowering-plant fertilizer during their active growing period. Follow the product instructions—more fertilizer isn’t better and can damage roots.
4. Remove fading flowers ✂️
Deadheading spent blooms can keep the plant looking tidy and, for some flowering species, encourage additional flowers.
5. Keep leaves clean
Dust can reduce the amount of light reaching the leaves. Gently wipe broad leaves with a clean, damp cloth when appropriate.
What’s the “little secret”?
There isn’t a universal secret ingredient that makes every houseplant bloom. Good light, appropriate watering, suitable temperature, and correct nutrition are far more reliable than adding household ingredients such as sugar, milk, or leftover drinks to the soil.
And remember: different plants have very different needs. A method that benefits an orchid may be harmful to a succulent or another houseplant.
