Doctors reveal that eating an overripe banana causes…

If you’re referring to the viral claim “eating an overripe banana causes…”, there is no evidence that an overripe banana suddenly causes a dangerous illness or other dramatic health problem in healthy people.

What does change as a banana becomes very ripe is its carbohydrate composition:

  • 🍌 Starch is converted into sugars, making the banana softer and sweeter.
  • Blood sugar may rise more quickly with a very ripe banana than with a less-ripe one. One small study in people with type 2 diabetes found a higher glycemic response to overripe versus underripe bananas.
  • Overripe doesn’t mean unhealthy or poisonous. A normal banana that’s brown-spotted and soft is still nutritious.
  • If the banana has mold, a fermented/alcohol-like smell, leaking liquid, or obvious spoilage, throw it away.

What about diabetes?

People with diabetes don’t necessarily have to avoid ripe bananas, but portion size and overall carbohydrate intake matter. Pairing a banana with a source of protein or healthy fat, such as plain yogurt or nuts, can make a more balanced snack.

So the claim that an overripe banana is inherently dangerous is clickbait. The main nutritional difference is that ripening changes some of the starch into sugars.
