Doctor Reveals a Fingernail Sign That May Tell You Something About Your Health
Your fingernails can sometimes provide clues about your overall health—but no fingernail feature can reliably predict your exact life expectancy.
One finding doctors may pay attention to is a new or unexplained change in the nails, particularly when it occurs along with other symptoms.
What Can Your Nails Reveal?
Nails can occasionally reflect problems such as:
- Iron deficiency or other nutritional deficiencies
- Certain thyroid or systemic illnesses
- Chronic lung or heart conditions
- Fungal infections
- Skin conditions such as psoriasis
- Repeated injury or trauma
What About “Nail Lines”?
Vertical ridges become more common with age and are often harmless. Horizontal grooves called Beau’s lines can sometimes appear after a significant illness, high fever, injury, or other interruption of nail growth.
Another finding doctors may evaluate is clubbing, where the fingertips become enlarged and the nails curve more than usual. Clubbing can sometimes be associated with underlying heart or lung disease and deserves medical evaluation.
Don’t Diagnose Yourself From a Nail Photo
A single ridge, spot, or change in nail color usually doesn’t tell the whole story. Nail appearance can vary naturally with age, genetics, medications, and everyday trauma.
When Should You Get Your Nails Checked?
Make an appointment with a healthcare professional if you notice a new, persistent, or rapidly changing nail abnormality, especially if it affects only one nail or occurs together with symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, breathing problems, persistent fatigue, swelling, or weakness.
