Doctor Uncovers A Telltale Sign In Your Fingernails That May Predict Your Life Expectancy

There isn’t a single fingernail sign that can reliably predict how long someone will live. Headlines making that claim generally overstate what medical research can tell us.

Some nail changes can provide clues about underlying health, though:

  • Clubbing — enlargement/rounding of the fingertips and increased curvature of the nails — can be associated with conditions affecting the lungs, heart, or digestive system.

  • Nail discoloration or thickening can result from fungal infections, trauma, medications, or other conditions.

  • New horizontal grooves (Beau’s lines) can occur after significant illness, fever, nutritional problems, or physical stress.

  • Pale or spoon-shaped nails can sometimes be associated with anemia or iron deficiency.

  • A dark streak in one nail can occasionally be a sign of melanoma and deserves medical assessment, particularly if it is new or changing.

These findings do not by themselves determine life expectancy. If you notice a new or rapidly changing nail abnormality—especially a dark streak, unexplained clubbing, or changes affecting only one nail—it’s sensible to have a clinician examine it.
