Doctor Uncovers A Telltale Sign In Your Fingernails That May Predict Your Life Expectancy

Can Your Fingernails Predict Your Life Expectancy?

The claim that a doctor can look at one fingernail and predict how long you’ll live is not medically reliable. Nail changes can sometimes provide clues about health, but they aren’t a life-expectancy test.

Some changes worth paying attention to include:

  • A new or changing dark/black streak: Rarely, this can be melanoma and should be examined.
  • Clubbing: Rounded, enlarged fingertips and increasingly curved nails can be associated with certain heart or lung conditions.
  • Spoon-shaped nails: May occur with iron deficiency.
  • Markedly pale nails: Can sometimes accompany anemia or other systemic problems.
  • Yellow, thickened, crumbly nails: Often caused by fungal infection, although other conditions can look similar.

Many nail changes are completely harmless and can result from aging, minor trauma, nail products, or fungal infections.

Bottom line: Your nails can occasionally reveal a health problem, but they cannot reliably tell you your life expectancy. A new, persistent, or rapidly changing nail abnormality is worth having evaluated by a healthcare professional.
