Cook’s Smart Trick for Easily Peeling Hard-Boiled Eggs
Peeling hard-boiled eggs can be frustrating when the shell sticks to the white. The good news is that how you cook and cool the eggs matters more than a secret ingredient.
1. 🔥 Start with already-boiling water
Bring the water to a boil, then carefully lower the eggs in with a spoon. Starting in hot water can make peeling easier than starting the eggs in cold water, although results can vary with egg freshness and cooking method.
2. ❄️ Give them an ice bath
As soon as they’re cooked, transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water for about 10–15 minutes.
The rapid cooling helps stop the cooking and can make the shell easier to separate.
3. 🥚 Crack the shell all over
Tap the egg gently against a hard surface and roll it under your palm to create a network of small cracks.
Then peel it under running water or submerged in water. Water can work its way between the shell and egg, helping loosen stubborn pieces.
