Clear your throat and lungs of mucus with this recipe – just 2 ingredients

If you’re referring to the popular “2-ingredient mucus-clearing recipe” claim, be careful: there isn’t a home recipe proven to literally “clear your throat and lungs” or remove an underlying lung infection.

For ordinary mucus from a cold or mild respiratory irritation, simple measures can help:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to help keep mucus thinner and easier to cough up.

  • Warm liquids can soothe an irritated throat and may make coughing mucus more comfortable.

  • Honey can help relieve coughing in adults and children over 1 year old, but it doesn’t “detox” or clean the lungs.

  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, which can worsen mucus production and airway irritation.

When mucus needs medical attention

Seek medical care if you have shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, a high or persistent fever, confusion, or symptoms that are getting worse rather than better. Persistent cough or mucus—especially in someone with asthma, COPD, or another lung condition—also deserves medical evaluation.

If you tell me the two ingredients in the recipe you’re referring to, I can tell you whether it’s safe and what evidence supports it.
