“Put Vicks VapoRub on this place every night” — what does it really do?
You may have seen claims that putting Vicks VapoRub on the feet, under the nose, or another unusual body part can cure everything from coughs to congestion, toenail fungus, headaches, or poor circulation.
Most of those claims aren’t supported by good clinical evidence.
What VapoRub is actually intended for
VapoRub contains camphor, eucalyptus oil and menthol. According to its current drug label, it is intended to:
- Temporarily relieve cough from a common cold when applied to the chest and throat
- Temporarily relieve minor muscle and joint aches and pains when applied to the affected area.
So, for example, putting it on your feet every night isn’t an established treatment for cough, circulation problems, arthritis, or other diseases.
⚠️ Important safety points
- Don’t put it inside your nostrils.
- Don’t swallow it.
- Don’t apply it to broken or damaged skin.
- Don’t cover it with a tight bandage.
- Don’t heat it, microwave it, or add it to hot water.
- Keep it away from young children; it shouldn’t be used in children under 2.
Camphor can be dangerous if swallowed, so accidental ingestion—particularly by a child—requires prompt medical attention.
🌙 What about using it before bed?
Using VapoRub on the chest and throat at bedtime is consistent with its labeled use for temporary cough relief. It can provide soothing vapors, but it isn’t a cure for the underlying infection. The U.S. label allows use up to three times daily, rather than requiring nightly application.
