Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

The idea behind this tip is that bananas ripen faster when exposed to ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that fruits release as they mature. The “one kitchen item” often mentioned in viral tips is usually plastic wrap or reusable wrap around the banana stems.

How to make bananas last longer

  1. Separate the bananas
    • Bananas stored in a bunch release and trap more ethylene around each other, which can speed ripening.
  2. Cover the stems
    • Wrap the crown/stem area with plastic wrap, beeswax wrap, or a reusable food wrap.
    • This may slow the release and spread of ethylene and can extend freshness by several days (the exact amount varies).
  3. Keep them away from other ripening fruit
    • Apples, avocados, tomatoes, and other ethylene-producing produce can make bananas ripen faster.
  4. Move ripe bananas to the fridge
    • The peel will turn dark, but the inside usually stays usable longer.
  5. Freeze overripe bananas
    • Peel them first and store in an airtight container or freezer bag for smoothies, baking, or oatmeal.

A few caveats: there is no guaranteed “10-day” extension for every banana because variety, temperature, and starting ripeness all matter. But reducing ethylene exposure and slowing moisture loss can help bananas stay usable longer.
