The trick is often said to be plastic wrap — but there’s an important detail!
The simple method
-
Wrap the stems of a banana bunch with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This may modestly slow ripening by reducing the release or spread of ethylene gas around the stems.
-
Keep bananas away from direct sunlight and heat.
-
Separate ripe bananas from other fruit if you want to limit exposure to ethylene produced by nearby fruit.
-
Refrigerate ripe bananas if you want them to last longer. The peel may darken, but the fruit inside can remain good for several more days.
Does it really add 10 days?
Not reliably. Wrapping the stems alone has limited evidence for extending banana life by a full 10 days. The variety, ripeness, and storage temperature all matter.
Best tip: Let green bananas ripen at room temperature, then refrigerate them once they reach your preferred ripeness.
