Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

If you’re referring to the viral banana-storage tip, the “one kitchen item” is usually plastic wrap (cling film)—specifically, wrapping the stem/crown of the banana bunch.

🍌 Why it may help

Bananas naturally release ethylene gas, a plant hormone that accelerates ripening. Covering the stem can reduce the amount of ethylene escaping from that area and may slow ripening somewhat.

A few important caveats:

  • It won’t reliably make bananas last exactly 10 extra days. The effect varies with temperature, ripeness, and how the bananas are stored.

  • Separating the bananas and wrapping the individual stems can sometimes help more than leaving the whole bunch together.

  • Keep unripe bananas at room temperature; refrigeration can interfere with normal ripening and may darken the peel.

  • Once bananas are ripe, refrigerating them can extend their usable life, even though the peel may turn brown.

So the headline has a kernel of truth, but “10 days longer” is an exaggerated guarantee rather than a rule.
