Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

Bananas Last 10 Days Longer With One Kitchen Item? 🍌

The viral trick usually refers to plastic wrap around the banana stems. It may slow ripening somewhat, but the claim that it reliably makes bananas last 10 days longer is exaggerated.

Try the stem-wrapping method

  1. Separate the bananas from the bunch.

  2. Wrap the stem/crown of each banana with a small piece of plastic wrap.

  3. Keep unripe or partly ripe bananas at room temperature.

  4. Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat.

  5. Once they’re ripe, refrigerating them can extend their edible life, although the peel may turn brown.

Why it may work

Bananas naturally produce ethylene, a plant hormone involved in ripening. Covering the stem may reduce ethylene movement and slightly slow the ripening process.

For even better results

A banana hanger can prevent bruising by keeping the fruit suspended, while avoiding warm areas and separating bananas from other ripe fruit can also help.

Bottom line: Wrapping the stems is a reasonable, low-cost experiment, but there’s no guarantee of an extra 10 days. Banana variety, starting ripeness, temperature, and handling all make a difference.
