What risks do you run when you sleep on your right side?

For most healthy people, sleeping on your right side is generally safe and doesn’t carry major health risks.

A few things can happen, though:

Acid reflux/heartburn: Right-side sleeping can make reflux worse for some people. The left side is generally better for reducing nighttime reflux.
Shoulder or hip discomfort: Staying on one side for hours can put pressure on the shoulder, hip, or ribs, especially with a poor mattress or pillow.
Neck/back strain: If your pillow doesn’t keep your head and spine aligned, side sleeping can cause stiffness or pain.
Snoring/sleep apnea: Side sleeping often helps compared with sleeping on your back, although the effect can vary from person to person.
Pregnancy: Side sleeping is generally encouraged later in pregnancy, and either side is usually acceptable; the left side is sometimes preferred for comfort and circulation, but right-side sleeping isn’t inherently dangerous.

If you’re asking because you’ve heard that sleeping on the right side can damage the heart or cause heart problems, that’s generally not true for healthy people.

If you tell me what specifically worries you—heart, stomach/reflux, breathing, pregnancy, or something else—I can explain the risks more precisely.
