Between the ages of 65 and 85: if you can still do these 5 things on your own, you’re stronger than you think

Between 65 and 85, These 5 Abilities Can Be Good Signs of Independence

There isn’t a magic age at which being able to perform five specific tasks proves you’re “stronger than you think.” But being able to manage everyday activities independently is a useful sign of functional fitness, mobility, balance, and strength.

1. 🪑 Getting up from a chair without using your hands

This requires leg and hip strength as well as balance. Difficulty repeatedly standing from a chair can be a reason to work on lower-body strength.

2. 🪜 Climbing a flight of stairs

Being able to climb stairs independently requires a combination of leg strength, balance, and cardiovascular fitness. How easily you can do it matters too.

3. 🛍️ Carrying everyday groceries

Carrying reasonably light shopping bags requires grip, arm, trunk, and leg strength. Being able to do ordinary household tasks is often more meaningful than a single fitness test.

4. 🚶 Walking independently

Walking safely without assistance is an important marker of mobility. Maintaining regular walking can help preserve strength and physical function.

5. 🧦 Getting dressed and putting on shoes

Being able to dress yourself, bend or reach appropriately, and manage shoes involves mobility, coordination, balance, and flexibility.
