Why Do We Get Cramps at Night?

Nighttime cramps are usually sudden, involuntary muscle contractions, most often affecting the calves, feet, or thighs. They can happen while you’re sleeping or when you stretch or move your leg.

Common reasons include:

Muscle fatigue or overuse during the day
Dehydration
Holding one position for a long time
Tight muscles, especially in the calves
Pregnancy or increasing age
Certain medications, including some diuretics and cholesterol medicines
Sometimes, there is no clear cause
What can help?

When a cramp starts, gently stretch and massage the muscle. For a calf cramp, straighten your leg and pull your toes toward your face. Staying adequately hydrated and regularly stretching your calves may also help reduce episodes.

If cramps are frequent, severe, persistent, or accompanied by swelling, weakness, numbness, or significant pain, it’s worth discussing them with a healthcare professional.
