NEVER LEAVE A CHARGER IN AN OUTLET WITHOUT YOUR PHONE? Here’s What’s Actually True
This warning is partly exaggerated. A modern, quality charger generally doesn’t become dangerous just because your phone isn’t connected. But there are still good reasons to unplug unused chargers.
1. ⚡ It consumes a small amount of electricity
A charger that’s plugged in but not charging a phone typically uses a tiny amount of standby power. One charger won’t make a meaningful difference to most electricity bills, but many devices can add up.
2. 🔥 Damaged or poor-quality chargers can be hazardous
The bigger concern is faulty, counterfeit, damaged, or poorly manufactured equipment. Frayed cables, cracked adapters, loose connections, or chargers that become unusually hot should be replaced.
3. 👶 Unused cables can create avoidable hazards
Children and pets can pull on or chew cables, while damaged cables can become an electrical risk. Unplugging and storing unused chargers reduces these possibilities.
🛡️ So should you unplug it?
It’s a sensible habit, but not an emergency rule. A reputable charger in good condition can generally remain plugged in safely. Unplug it when you’re not using it if the charger is damaged, gets hot, is very old, or you’re unsure of its quality.
And never overload an outlet or power strip.
