🚨 10 Warning Signs of a Stroke Everyone Should Know
A stroke can happen suddenly, and recognizing the symptoms quickly can make a critical difference. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe. If you notice signs of a stroke, seek emergency medical help immediately.
1. Sudden weakness or numbness
A sudden feeling of weakness or numbness—especially in the face, arm, or leg and particularly on one side of the body—is a major warning sign.
2. One side of the face droops
Ask the person to smile. If one side of the face appears to droop or feels numb, treat it as an emergency.
3. Sudden difficulty speaking
Speech may suddenly become slurred, unclear, strange, or difficult to produce.
4. Trouble understanding speech
A person may suddenly have difficulty understanding what others are saying or following a simple conversation.
5. Sudden vision changes
Blurred or double vision, or sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, can occur with stroke.
6. Sudden loss of balance
Unexpected dizziness, difficulty walking, loss of coordination, or trouble maintaining balance can be a stroke symptom.
7. A sudden, severe headache
A sudden severe headache with no known cause—particularly if it is unusual for the person—can be a warning sign.
8. Sudden confusion
Someone may suddenly become confused, disoriented, or unable to communicate normally.
9. One arm becomes weak or numb
Ask the person to raise both arms. If one arm drifts downward or cannot be lifted normally, seek emergency help.
10. Symptoms that disappear
This is especially important. Stroke-like symptoms that disappear after a few minutes may be a transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a warning stroke. A TIA should not be ignored because it can signal a risk of a future stroke.
