If you mean choking when you’re alone, there is a real emergency technique—but “save your life in a single second” is misleading. A complete airway blockage can become fatal quickly.
If you are alone and choking
If you cannot breathe, speak, or cough effectively:
Call your local emergency number immediately if you can. Put the phone on speaker while acting.
Give yourself abdominal thrusts: make a fist and place it just above your navel, grasp it with your other hand, and thrust inward and upward repeatedly.
Or use a firm chair/counter edge: place the upper abdomen against a firm edge just above the navel and drive your body inward and upward against it. Avoid an edge that could injure your ribs.
Continue until the object comes out or you become unable to respond.
Do not blindly put your fingers into your throat—you can push the object deeper. If you can cough forcefully, keep coughing rather than immediately performing thrusts.
After a significant choking episode, medical evaluation is advisable, even if the object comes out, because injuries or material remaining in the airway can sometimes cause complications.
If the person becomes unconscious, emergency services should be contacted and CPR should begin if you’re able to perform it.
If you’re asking because someone is choking right now, tell me whether they can breathe, speak, or cough, and I can walk you through the appropriate emergency steps.
