10 Warning Signs of a Blood Clot in the Leg You Should Know

A blood clot in a deep vein is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It most often develops in the leg and can become dangerous if part of the clot travels to the lungs.

Importantly, some people with DVT have no symptoms, and these symptoms can also occur with other conditions.

🚨 Possible warning signs

  1. Swelling in one leg — especially when it develops without an obvious injury.
  2. Pain or tenderness — often in the calf or thigh and not explained by an injury.
  3. Warmth — the affected area may feel warmer than the other leg.
  4. Red or discolored skin — particularly around the painful or swollen area.
  5. A feeling of heaviness or tightness in the affected leg.
  6. Pain that becomes more noticeable when walking or standing.
  7. Unexplained calf discomfort that persists rather than improving normally.
  8. Swelling that affects one side more than the other.
  9. Tenderness along a deep vein, sometimes without obvious bruising.
  10. A combination of swelling, pain, warmth, and discoloration—this combination is particularly concerning for DVT.

⚠️ Don’t wait if you suspect a clot

DVT cannot be confirmed by symptoms alone. Healthcare professionals may use tests such as an ultrasound to determine whether a clot is present.

Risk is higher after major surgery or hospitalization, prolonged immobility or long travel, pregnancy, cancer, previous blood clots, estrogen-containing medications, and certain injuries, among other factors.

🫁 Know the emergency signs

A DVT can break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE).
