I Put Baking Soda on My Feet… and Here’s What Actually Happened

Baking soda is one of those household ingredients people seem to have a solution for everything.

So what happens if you put it on your feet?

✨ It may help with odor—but don’t expect a miracle

Baking soda is alkaline and can help neutralize some odors. That’s why you may find it in foot powders and deodorizing products.

But it doesn’t magically eliminate athlete’s foot, fungal infections, or other underlying causes of foot problems.

🧼 A simple way to use it

If you’re using baking soda for odor, keep it simple:

  1. Wash your feet with soap and water.
  2. Dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes.
  3. Use a small amount of baking soda in a clean, dry sock or as directed by a foot-care product.
  4. Stop if your skin becomes irritated, dry, red, or itchy.

Keeping feet clean and dry is often more important than any particular powder.

⚠️ Don’t use it on damaged skin

Avoid putting baking soda on open wounds, cracked or bleeding skin, or severely irritated areas.

If you have diabetes, poor circulation, significant neuropathy, or a foot wound, it’s especially important to be cautious with home treatments and seek professional advice when needed.

🦠 What if your feet are itchy or peeling?

If you have persistent itching, peeling, cracking, burning, or a rash between your toes, you may have athlete’s foot or another skin condition.

Baking soda isn’t a proven treatment for the underlying infection. An appropriate antifungal treatment or medical evaluation may be needed.
