Why seniors should wear socks even at home

Wearing socks at home can be useful for some older adults, but there isn’t a rule that every senior should wear socks all the time.

Why socks can help

  1. Keep feet warm — Older adults may feel cold more easily, particularly in cooler rooms.
  2. Reduce minor skin injuries — Socks provide a layer of protection from friction and small scrapes.
  3. Help with dry skin — Moisturizer followed by clean cotton or breathable socks can help retain moisture.
  4. Provide some comfort with footwear — Socks can reduce rubbing and friction inside shoes or slippers.
  5. Compression socks may help certain people with swelling — but they should be used appropriately and aren’t suitable for everyone.

One important caution

Loose, well-fitting socks are preferable. Tight elastic bands can restrict circulation or leave deep marks. And if someone has diabetes, reduced sensation, or circulation problems, daily foot checks are particularly important because injuries may go unnoticed.

Also, socks don’t necessarily make walking safer. On smooth floors, ordinary socks can actually increase the risk of slipping. For walking around the house, properly fitting footwear or non-slip socks may be safer.

Bottom line: Clean, comfortable socks can protect and warm the feet, but seniors should choose them based on their individual needs rather than assuming socks are always necessary.
