Found an unfamiliar insect in your home? Don’t panic
Viral posts often say that finding a particular insect is a “warning sign” of something dangerous, but an insect’s presence usually has a much more ordinary explanation.
It may indicate:
-
Food or organic material is attracting insects.
-
Moisture or standing water is present.
-
There are gaps around doors, windows, pipes, or walls where insects can enter.
-
Houseplants, firewood, cardboard, or stored goods have brought them indoors.
-
There may be a larger infestation if you’re seeing many insects repeatedly.
What to do
-
Don’t touch an unfamiliar insect with bare hands.
-
If possible, take a clear photo so it can be identified.
-
Remove food sources and clean crumbs or spills.
-
Check for leaks, damp areas, and standing water.
-
Seal obvious cracks and entry points.
-
If you’re repeatedly finding large numbers of insects, consider professional pest control.
Important: Some insects can bite, sting, contaminate food, or trigger allergies, so identification matters.
If you send me a photo of the insect or describe its color, size, shape, number of legs, and where you found it, I can help identify it and tell you what you should do.
