Yes—you can whiten yellowed mattresses and pillows without bleach. The yellowing is often from sweat, body oils, moisture, and age.
For a mattress
- Vacuum thoroughly on both sides if possible.
- Mix:
- 2 cups warm water
- ½ cup 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 2–3 tablespoons baking soda
- A small amount of mild dish soap
- Put the mixture in a spray bottle and lightly mist the yellowed areas. Don’t soak the mattress.
- Gently work it in with a soft brush or cloth.
- Leave it for 30–60 minutes.
- Blot with a clean, slightly damp cloth.
- Let the mattress dry completely, preferably with good airflow and sunlight.
Important: Test a hidden area first, and don’t mix hydrogen peroxide with bleach, ammonia, or other cleaning chemicals.
For yellowed pillows
Check the care label first.
For washable pillows, wash them with your normal detergent plus ½ cup of baking soda or an appropriate amount of oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate). Use an extra rinse if available.
Dry them completely—ideally with dryer balls or clean tennis balls to keep the filling fluffy. Any remaining moisture can encourage mildew.
If the yellowing doesn’t come out
If the mattress or pillow is old and the discoloration has penetrated deeply into the material, it may be permanent oxidation/aging rather than surface staining. In that case, cleaning can improve the appearance but may not restore the original white color.
For prevention, a washable waterproof mattress protector and pillow protectors make a surprisingly big difference.
