What about the ankle swelling?

This deserves special attention. Amlodipine-related swelling usually develops over the first few weeks to months or after a dose increase and commonly affects the feet and ankles. It is usually not dangerous, but it can be troublesome. Doctors may consider changing the dose or medication regimen if it’s significant.

🚨 Rare symptoms that need urgent attention

Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing or swelling of the throat/tongue, a severe blistering or peeling skin reaction, or sudden severe abdominal pain. Amlodipine can very rarely be associated with serious reactions, including pancreatitis and severe allergic reactions.

There is also a very rare possibility of a heart attack or worsening angina when treatment is first started or the dose is increased, particularly in people with significant coronary disease. New or worsening chest pain should be treated urgently.

Most important: Don’t stop amlodipine on your own. Stopping it can allow blood pressure to rise again and can be dangerous. If a side effect is troubling you, speak with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the dose or treatment should be changed.
