Laundry as White and Pure as Milk” — What Ingredient Actually Helps?
The viral “one secret ingredient” claim is usually referring to baking soda, but it isn’t a miracle bleach. Baking soda can help deodorize laundry, reduce mineral buildup, and brighten dingy whites, while stronger whitening generally comes from an oxygen-based laundry bleach.
Try this simple method
For a normal load of white laundry:
- Put your whites in the washer.
- Add your usual laundry detergent.
- Add about ½ cup (120 ml) of baking soda directly to the wash drum—not the detergent dispenser.
- Choose the warmest water temperature permitted by the garment’s care label.
- Dry according to the care label; sunlight can also help brighten whites naturally.
For seriously gray or yellow whites
An oxygen-based bleach is generally more effective than baking soda for stubborn discoloration. Follow the product directions and check the fabric label first; some materials, including wool and silk, aren’t suitable for oxygen bleach.
⚠️ Don’t mix vinegar with bleach or hydrogen peroxide, and don’t combine cleaning chemicals unless the product instructions specifically say it’s safe.
