“8 Habits You Should Stop This Year If You Are Taking Amlodipine…”

The headline is more dramatic than the evidence. You don’t need to stop living normally because you’re taking amlodipine, but a few habits and precautions are worth knowing.

1. 🚫 Don’t stop amlodipine on your own

Amlodipine controls blood pressure and/or angina. If you’re having side effects, talk with your prescriber rather than stopping it yourself.

2. 🍊 Be cautious with grapefruit

The NHS advises avoiding grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking amlodipine because it may increase the likelihood of side effects.

3. 🍷 Don’t overdo alcohol

Alcohol can add to amlodipine’s blood-pressure-lowering effect and make dizziness or light-headedness more likely.

4. 🧂 Don’t assume more salt is harmless

Amlodipine doesn’t cancel out the effects of a high-sodium diet. Limiting excess salt is still an important part of controlling blood pressure.

5. 🚶 Don’t ignore dizziness

Amlodipine can cause dizziness, particularly when you’re adjusting to treatment. Stand up slowly and be careful with activities where a sudden loss of balance could cause injury.

6. 🦶 Don’t ignore swollen ankles

Ankle/leg swelling (edema) is one of the best-known side effects and can be dose-related. In clinical trials it occurred more often at higher doses.

Don’t simply stop the medication because of swelling—tell your clinician, who can decide whether your treatment needs adjustment.

7. 💊 Don’t start supplements or herbal remedies without checking

Some medicines and supplements can interact with amlodipine, including St John’s wort and certain medicines used for infections or immune conditions. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about everything you take.

8. ❤️ Don’t ignore new or worsening chest pain

Rarely, angina can worsen after starting or increasing amlodipine, particularly in people with severe coronary artery disease. New, severe, or persistent chest pain requires prompt medical evaluation.

One important clarification

Amlodipine can also be associated with headache, flushing, palpitations, fatigue, nausea and abdominal discomfort. Most adverse effects are mild to moderate, and the medication is generally well tolerated.
