10 Early Signs of Dementia You Shouldn’t Ignore

The headline is reasonable if “early signs” means changes that are persistent and begin interfering with everyday life. But none of these signs by itself proves that someone has dementia. Other conditions, medications, depression, sleep problems and vitamin deficiencies can also affect memory and thinking.

🧠 Ten warning signs

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life — especially repeatedly forgetting recently learned information.
  2. Difficulty planning or solving problems — such as struggling with familiar bills, recipes or finances.
  3. Trouble completing familiar tasks — for example, becoming unable to manage a routine activity previously done independently.
  4. Confusion about time or place — losing track of dates, seasons or where you are.
  5. Difficulty judging distance or visual-spatial relationships — which can affect driving, walking or reading.
  6. New problems with speaking or writing — difficulty finding familiar words or following conversations.
  7. Frequently losing things and being unable to retrace your steps.
  8. Poorer judgment or decision-making — including unusual financial or personal decisions.
  9. Withdrawal from hobbies or social activities that the person previously enjoyed.
  10. Unexplained changes in mood or personality — such as increased anxiety, suspicion, fear, irritability or confusion.

What separates dementia from normal aging?

Occasionally forgetting a name or appointment and remembering it later can be normal. More concerning is a progressive pattern—for example, repeatedly asking the same questions, getting lost in familiar places, or being unable to perform familiar tasks. Dementia is not a normal part of aging
