10 Early Warning Signs Your Body Might Be Signaling a Stroke (Don’t Ignore These)

10 Early Warning Signs Your Body Might Be Signaling a Stroke

The phrase “early warning signs” can be misleading. A stroke usually causes sudden symptoms, rather than a predictable series of symptoms days or weeks beforehand. A TIA (“warning stroke”) can produce the same symptoms temporarily and still requires urgent medical evaluation.

🚨 10 signs to take seriously

  1. Sudden weakness or numbness — especially on one side of the face, arm, or leg.
  2. One side of the face drooping or an uneven smile.
  3. Sudden trouble speaking — slurred speech or difficulty finding words.
  4. Difficulty understanding speech or sudden confusion.
  5. Sudden vision changes — blurred, double, or lost vision in one or both eyes.
  6. Sudden dizziness or loss of balance.
  7. Sudden difficulty walking or coordinating movements.
  8. A sudden, severe headache with no obvious cause.
  9. Sudden difficulty swallowing or unexplained problems controlling the mouth.
  10. Sudden unusual weakness or loss of coordination, even without obvious facial or speech changes.

🧠 Remember B.E. F.A.S.T.

B — Balance: sudden loss of balance
E — Eyes: sudden vision changes
F — Face: facial drooping
A — Arm: weakness or numbness
S — Speech: difficulty speaking or understanding
TTime: call emergency medical services immediately.

Don’t wait for symptoms to get worse

If symptoms disappear after a few minutes, don’t assume everything is fine. A TIA can be a warning of a future stroke and requires urgent assessment.

If someone is experiencing possible stroke symptoms right now, note when they were last known to be normal and seek emergency medical care immediately. Some clot-busting treatments are time-sensitive, while selected patients with certain large-vessel strokes may benefit from clot removal even later.
