8 Foods That Help Stop Frequent Nighttime Urination and Urinary Urgency

8 Foods That May Help With Frequent Nighttime Urination

The headline “foods that stop nighttime urination” is too strong. No food has been proven to stop nocturia or urinary urgency by itself. In fact, diet affects people differently, and the strongest practical advice is often to identify and reduce foods and drinks that irritate the bladder.

That said, these foods can fit well into a bladder-friendly, generally healthy diet:

  1. Oatmeal and whole grains — provide fiber and may help prevent constipation, which can worsen urinary symptoms.
  2. Berries — a nutritious, fiber-containing choice that can replace highly processed or sugary snacks.
  3. Leafy green vegetables — useful as part of an overall healthy eating pattern.
  4. Beans and lentils — provide fiber and plant protein; fiber can help keep bowel movements regular.
  5. Nuts and seeds — nutritious options for snacks and meals.
  6. Lean protein such as fish or poultry — can form part of a balanced diet without relying heavily on processed meats.
  7. Non-citrus fruits such as apples or pears — provide fluid and fiber; however, individual bladder triggers vary.
  8. Water, consumed appropriately during the day — adequate hydration is important. Don’t severely restrict fluids in an attempt to stop nighttime urination, because dehydration can cause problems.

More important than adding a “magic” food

If nighttime urination is bothering you, try keeping a bladder diary for several days. Record what you drink, when you drink it, what you eat, and when you urinate. This can reveal personal triggers.

Common triggers include coffee/caffeine, alcohol, fizzy drinks, chocolate, spicy foods, citrus drinks, and tomato-based foods. Not everyone reacts to all of them.

You can also discuss with your clinician whether moving more of your fluid intake earlier in the day and reducing drinks for a few hours before bedtime is appropriate for you. Don’t do this without medical advice if you have a condition requiring careful fluid management.
