If you’re checking the “Ants can’t stand it!” headline, the popular claim that one household ingredient will keep ants away for good is misleading.
🐜 What actually works
- Vinegar and water: Wiping ant trails with a mild vinegar-water solution can temporarily disrupt their scent trails, but it won’t eliminate the colony.
- Cinnamon, orange peels, red pepper and essential oils: Despite viral “natural ant repellent” recipes, research-based extension guidance does not consider these reliable methods for getting rid of an ant infestation.
- Clean up food and water: Store food securely, wipe up crumbs and spills, and address leaks or damp areas that attract ants.
- Seal entry points: Caulking cracks and gaps can reduce the routes ants use to enter your home.
- Use ant bait: For an established indoor infestation, slow-acting bait can be much more effective because workers carry it back to the colony. It can take weeks or longer to eliminate a colony.
Bottom line: There isn’t a magic natural ingredient that reliably keeps ants away permanently. The most effective approach is to remove food sources, block entry points, locate the nest when possible, and use appropriately labeled bait if needed.
