“My Big Toe Was on Fire…” — 5 Drinks That May Help With Gout

If the “burning” big toe means sudden severe pain, swelling, redness, and warmth at the base of the big toe, gout is one possible explanation. But no drink can “naturally eliminate” uric acid or quickly dissolve gout crystals. Persistent or recurrent attacks often require medical treatment.

5 better drink choices

1. 💧 Water
Probably the most useful choice. Staying adequately hydrated helps your kidneys excrete uric acid. Avoid forcing huge quantities of water if you have been told to restrict fluids.

2. 🥛 Low-fat milk
Low-fat dairy has been associated with lower uric-acid levels and a reduced risk of gout attacks.

3. 🍒 Tart cherry juice
Some research suggests tart cherries or tart-cherry products may reduce the risk of gout flares, although they aren’t a replacement for urate-lowering medication. Choose an unsweetened product when possible.

4. ☕ Coffee
Regular coffee consumption has been associated in some studies with lower gout risk, but evidence isn’t strong enough to prescribe coffee as a treatment—and adding lots of sugar defeats some of the dietary benefit.

5. 🍊 Water with a little citrus
Citrus provides vitamin C, which may modestly affect uric acid. However, vitamin-C supplements aren’t routinely recommended specifically to treat gout by current guidelines.

🚫 What to limit

Beer and other alcohol, plus sugar-sweetened drinks and high-fructose beverages, can increase gout risk.

During a painful attack

Don’t rely on drinks alone. Rest and elevate the affected foot, use an ice pack for short periods, and contact a healthcare professional about appropriate gout treatment. Anti-inflammatory medicines, colchicine, or corticosteroids may be used depending on your health and other medications.
