Who Is Most at Risk of Night Cramps? 🌙🦵
Night leg cramps are sudden, painful muscle contractions—usually in the calf, foot, or thigh—that occur during sleep or while resting. They’re common and often have no single identifiable cause. (Mayo Clinic)
People more likely to experience them
- Older adults
Risk increases with age, partly because muscle mass and muscle function change over time. (Mayo Clinic) - People who don’t drink enough fluids đź’§
Dehydration can contribute to muscle cramping, particularly after sweating or physical activity. (Mayo Clinic) - People who are very inactive—or suddenly overwork their muscles
Long periods of sitting, poor physical conditioning, or unusually strenuous activity can increase the likelihood of cramps. (Mayo Clinic) - Pregnant women
Leg cramps are particularly common during pregnancy, especially later in pregnancy. (Mayo Clinic) - People taking certain medications đź’Š
Diuretics (“water pills”) and some medicines used for blood pressure or cholesterol have been associated with leg cramps. Don’t stop medication without discussing it with a healthcare professional. (Mayo Clinic) - People with certain medical conditions
Diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, kidney disease, thyroid disorders and problems affecting blood flow can sometimes be associated with night cramps. (Mayo Clinic)
What can help?
Gentle calf stretching before bed, regular physical activity, adequate fluid intake, and avoiding excessive alcohol can help some people. During a cramp, gently stretch the affected muscle and massage it; standing and putting weight on the affected leg may also help. (Mayo Clinic)
When shouldn’t you ignore cramps?
Talk to a healthcare professional if cramps regularly disturb your sleep, last longer than about 10 minutes, or occur with leg swelling, numbness, persistent pain, weakness, or loss of muscle mass. (Mayo Clinic)
Important: Don’t automatically assume night cramps mean you need magnesium or potassium supplements. The cause isn’t always a mineral deficiency, and unnecessary supplementation can be harmful in some circumstances.
