How Long Does a Watermelon Last Once You’ve Cut It?
Once you cut a watermelon, refrigerate it promptly. For best quality, a practical home-storage guideline is to use it within about 3–4 days when kept properly refrigerated. USDA materials specifically recommend refrigerating ripe/cut watermelon for up to 4 days.
🧊 How to store it properly
- Keep your refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below.
- Put cut watermelon in a covered airtight container or wrap it well.
- Use a clean knife and clean hands when cutting it.
- It’s best to rinse the outside of the whole watermelon under running water and scrub the rind before cutting, since bacteria on the rind can potentially be transferred to the flesh by the knife.
⏰ Don’t leave cut watermelon sitting out
Cut watermelon shouldn’t remain at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour when temperatures are above 90°F/32°C).
🚮 When should you throw it away?
Discard it if it develops mold, an unpleasant/sour odor, slimy or unusually mushy texture, or other obvious signs of spoilage. Don’t taste questionable fruit to determine whether it’s safe.
One useful tip: Keep watermelon in larger pieces rather than cutting it into tiny cubes until you’re ready to eat it. USDA notes that larger pieces lose less water and can remain more stable during storage.
