The kitchen item that can significantly extend the shelf life of bananas is plastic wrap (or aluminum foil).
When you wrap the stem cluster of a bunch of bananas tightly, you can dramatically slow down how fast they ripen and brown, keeping them fresh for days—sometimes significantly longer than if they were left exposed on an open fruit bowl.
Why Wrapping the Stem Works
Bananas release a natural plant hormone called ethylene gas, which acts as a ripening agent. While this gas is emitted from the entire fruit, the vast majority of it is concentrated and released through the crown (stem).
When bananas sit openly in a fruit bowl, the escaping ethylene gas circulates around the bunch, speeding up the ripening process for the entire cluster. Furthermore, if you store bananas right next to other ethylene-sensitive produce (like apples, avocados, or tomatoes), they will all ripen and spoil much faster.
By sealing the crown tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, you trap the escaping gas, slowing down the chemical signaling that tells the fruit to turn brown and soften.
How to Do It Properly
-
Separate the bananas: For maximum effectiveness, gently pull or cut the bananas apart from the main bunch so you can access the individual stems. (Leaving them as a whole cluster still works if wrapped well, but separating reduces bruising and gas exchange between individual fruits).
-
Wrap tightly: Take a small piece of plastic wrap and wrap it firmly around the stem/crown area of each banana or the collective stem.
-
Secure it: Make sure there are no large gaps where air can easily escape. Some people also use aluminum foil for a tighter barrier.
-
Hang or store: If possible, hanging bananas from a hook prevents bruising from pressing against the counter, while the plastic wrap manages the gas.
Pro-Tip: Keep Them Away From Other Fruit
Even with a wrapped stem, keep your bananas away from fruit bowls containing apples, melons, or peaches. Those fruits also emit high levels of ethylene and will accelerate the aging process of your bananas from the outside!
