Put 1 Glass of Salt in a Car: Surprising Hack Every Driver Needs to Know

That viral “1 glass of salt in your car” hack is mostly exaggerated. Salt can be useful in a few limited situations, but simply leaving a glass of salt in the car isn’t a proven cure-all.

What salt can actually do

  • Reduce moisture: Salt is hygroscopic, so it can absorb some moisture from the surrounding air. However, a bowl of ordinary table salt has limited capacity and is much less effective than a purpose-made moisture absorber.
  • Help with odors indirectly: Reducing moisture can sometimes make a damp smell less noticeable, but salt doesn’t function as a general car deodorizer.
  • Winter conditions: Salt is commonly used to melt ice on roads, but don’t scatter household salt around your car or on painted surfaces—salt can accelerate corrosion.

If your car has condensation

A better approach is to find the source of the moisture, check door/window seals and carpets, and use the car’s ventilation/air-conditioning system to dry the cabin.

And if you’re thinking of putting a glass of salt in the car overnight, make sure it can’t tip over—spilled salt and moisture can be unpleasant for the interior and potentially contribute to corrosion.

Bottom line: Salt isn’t a secret automotive trick. For persistent dampness or odors, fixing the underlying moisture problem is much more effective.
