Signs Your Heart May Not Be Okay — Pay Attention
Some symptoms can signal a serious heart problem, while others have less dangerous causes. The important thing is to recognize new, severe, or worsening symptoms.
-
Chest pressure, squeezing, heaviness, or pain — especially if it lasts several minutes or repeatedly returns.
-
Shortness of breath — particularly during minimal activity, at rest, or when lying down.
-
Pain spreading beyond the chest — such as to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen.
-
Unusual sweating, nausea, or vomiting — particularly when occurring with chest discomfort or breathlessness.
-
Unexplained extreme fatigue or weakness — especially when it’s new or accompanied by other symptoms.
-
Palpitations or an irregular heartbeat — especially with dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
-
Fainting or nearly fainting — which can sometimes indicate an abnormal heart rhythm or another cardiovascular problem.
-
Swelling of the ankles, legs, or abdomen — particularly when accompanied by increasing breathlessness or rapid weight gain.
🚨 Don’t wait with possible heart-attack symptoms
If you develop new or severe chest pressure/pain, significant difficulty breathing, fainting, or pain accompanied by sweating/nausea, seek emergency medical care immediately. Heart attacks don’t always cause dramatic chest pain; symptoms can be less typical in women, older adults, and people with diabetes.
A symptom by itself doesn’t prove that you have heart disease. But persistent or unexplained symptoms deserve medical evaluation.
