7 Signs Your Heart May Be in Serious Trouble
Some heart problems develop gradually, while others require immediate emergency treatment. These warning signs shouldn’t be ignored:
-
Chest pressure, squeezing, or pain — especially if it lasts more than a few minutes or keeps returning.
-
Shortness of breath — particularly at rest or with much less activity than usual.
-
Pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen — this can occur during a heart attack.
-
Unexplained sweating, nausea, or vomiting — particularly when occurring with chest discomfort or breathlessness.
-
Fainting or near-fainting — can sometimes indicate a serious rhythm or structural heart problem.
-
New or persistent palpitations — a racing, pounding, or irregular heartbeat accompanied by dizziness, chest pain, or breathlessness is more concerning.
-
New swelling in the legs, ankles, or abdomen — especially with breathlessness or rapid weight gain, which can occur with heart failure.
🚨 Don’t wait during a possible heart attack
If you develop severe or persistent chest pressure/pain, significant breathing difficulty, fainting, or symptoms suggesting a heart attack, call your local emergency service immediately. Don’t drive yourself to the hospital.
Women, older adults, and people with diabetes can sometimes have less typical heart-attack symptoms, such as unusual fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, or back/jaw discomfort.
If you tell me which symptom you’re experiencing and how long it has been happening, I can help you determine how urgently it needs to be evaluated.
