Protect Your Home and Wallet: Unplug These 5 Appliances When You’re Done Using Them
Unplugging appliances can reduce standby electricity use and, for some devices, reduce risks associated with faulty wiring or damaged equipment. But you don’t need to unplug everything in your home.
1. Space heaters 🔥
When you’re finished using a portable heater, switch it off and unplug it. These appliances draw substantial power and can become a fire hazard if left operating unattended.
2. Toasters and toaster ovens 🍞
These heating appliances should be switched off and unplugged after use, particularly if you’re leaving the house. Keep them away from curtains and other combustible materials.
3. Hair dryers and styling tools 💇
Unplug hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons after use. Besides avoiding standby consumption, this eliminates the possibility of a device being accidentally left powered on.
4. Coffee makers ☕
If your coffee maker has a heating plate or warming function, unplugging it after use prevents unnecessary electricity consumption and eliminates a potential heat source.
5. Chargers and power adapters 🔌
Phone and laptop chargers generally use very little electricity when plugged in without a device, but unplugging damaged, unusually hot, or poorly made adapters is especially important. Don’t cover chargers while they’re operating.
What about TVs, microwaves, and computers?
These can consume standby power, sometimes called phantom or vampire energy. If you’re trying to reduce electricity use, connecting several entertainment devices to a properly rated power strip makes it easy to disconnect them when they’re not needed.
Don’t routinely unplug appliances that need continuous power, such as refrigerators, freezers, medical equipment, or security systems, unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically allow it.
And if you’re unplugging something, grip the plug rather than pulling on the cord—a small habit that helps prevent electrical damage.
